Dance/Movement Therapy

The body has recorded all of your past.

At times, it might feel like it has a life of its own.

It takes over as you experience a panic attack or a crying spell.

When you are confronted by sudden fears you find yourself powerless over certain compulsions, like an increased impulse to overeat.

Pain and trauma tell the mind to separate itself from the body.

Dance/Movement Therapy techniques are helpful when so much is occurring in the body that needs expression and for which you still have no words.

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) as “the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being.”

Your movement is a bridge to your internal experience.

As you familiarize yourself with how you move, how you feel in the moment, what’s arising inside you, I am there with you to support you.

You can be assured that anything that arises within you, an insight or a new way of experiencing yourself, will only occur when you are ready to move on to a new space within yourself. I am there to see you and hear you.

You will be surprised at how much information you have inside your body that can guide you and nudge you along.

Dance/Movement Therapy with children on the Autism Spectrum.

Children on the autism spectrum are often overwhelmed by sensory stimuli, noise, changes in routine, and they can’t fully verbalize and reach out to others for help. They often show us how they feel through their actions, movement expressions.

Dance/Movement Therapy can support this expression. We will move together with or without music, and help your child use her unique movement and actions to communicate who she is, how she feels.

The safety and consistency of the sessions support the development of trust in the space with me, and trust in her body as a safe container of all her experience. Feeling more at ease in her own skin, she can feel less anxious about reaching out to others.

Group Dance/Movement Therapy for adults

Dance is the oldest form of expression and communication. All cultures have at one point in time used dance for rituals, special occasions or as a connection to the spirit world.

When we dance, we share an experience, be it happy or sad; the rhythm and the movement bring us together and facilitate connection with each other through our shared humanity.

In Dance/Movement sessions with others, we move together. You may laugh, you may cry, you may jump with joy, retreat with sadness or anything in between. You have the group, me, the music and the dance to support you.

Reacquaint yourself with your body and your mind as one.

When we move together as a group, who you are will be reflected to you. You will see yourself.

Through our work, you will learn to “hear” what your body is saying. You develop an appreciation of how much your body has helped you through the pain and the difficulties.

Your body is now your friend, your ally in growth.
